Knowing the Five Pillars of Islam and executing each of them is the very core of what it means to be Muslim. They are the essential building blocks for our faith. In this course, students learn about each Pillar in great detail and how to practice them. A summary of what you can expect to learn is given below.
The Five Pillars of Islam are:
- Shahadah – This is the first and most crucial Pillar of Islam. It is the declaration made by each Muslim that there is no God but Allah SWT and the Prophet Muhammed PBUH is His messenger.
- Salah – The second Pillar of Islam is Salah. This entails the ritual of prayer that Muslims are required to perform five times a day.
- Zakat – The third Pillar of Islam is Zakat. This is an annual almsgiving that every Muslim is obligated to give to the poor and needy. Zakat helps to keep a Muslim’s wealth pure and it is an excellent opportunity for them to perform annual charity to the less fortunate.
- Sawm – It is the fourth Pillar of Islam. It entails a month of fasting during the Holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan is a crucial time for Muslims to increase their faith and spirituality by abstaining from food and drink while bringing themselves closer to Allah SWT by ways of performing worship.
- Hajj – The last Pillar of Islam is Hajj. This is the pilgrimage that Muslims are required to make to Mecca during the month of Hajj, at least once in their lifetime.
