What is Salah (Namaz)?
Salah, is also known Namaz, is the 2nd pillar of Islam. It is the obligatory prayer performed by Muslims five times a day. Through Salah, Muslims connect with Allah (SWT), seek guidance, forgiveness, and spiritual peace.
There are five daily prayers:
- Fajr – before sunrise
- Dhuhr – after midday
- Asr – late afternoon
- Maghrib – just after sunset
- Isha – night prayer
Importance of Salah in Islam
Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:
“Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.”
— [Surah An-Nisa 4:103]
Performing Salah strengthens our faith, brings us closer to Allah, and keeps us on the path of righteousness. Missing prayer weakens the heart and disconnects us from our Creator.

Step by Step Guide to Perform Salah (Namaz)
Step 1: Make Wudu (Ablution)
Before you begin Salah, you must be in a state of cleanliness. Perform Wudu by washing your:
- Hands
- Mouth
- Nose
- Face
- Arms
- Wipe head
- Feet
Here you can read complete guide how to perform wudu step by step.
Step 2: Face the Qibla
Stand facing the direction of the Kaaba (Qibla) in Makkah.
Step 3: Make Intention (Niyyah)
Silently make the intention in your heart for which prayer you are about to perform (e.g., Fajr, Dhuhr, asr, Maghrib and isha).
Step 4: The Prayer (Rakahs)
Each unit of prayer is called a Rak’ah. Here’s how a basic Rak’ah is performed:
- Takbir (Allahu Akbar) : Raise hands and say “Allah O Akbar”
- Qiyam (Standing) :Recite Surah Al-Fatiha and another Surah (e.g., Surah Ikhlas)
- Ruku (Bowing) : Say Allahu Akbar and go into Rukūʿ (bowing). Then say ‘Subḥāna Rabbiyal-ʿAẓīm’ at least three times.
- Standing again: Say “Sami’Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana lakal hamd”
- Sujood (Prostration):Say Allahu Akbar and go into sajda Say “Subhana Rabbiyal A’la” at least 3 times
- Sit between Sujoods : Say Allahu Akbar and sit between sujood, Say Dua ‘Rabbighfir lī’ or remain silent for at least three seconds
- Second Sujood : Repeat as above
How many Rakats are in salah?
This completes one Rak’ah. Each prayer has a specific number of Rak’ahs. Here are the complete Rak’ahs of the five daily prayers: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha.
Salah | Sunnah Before | Fard | Sunnah After | Nnawafil | Witr | Total Rak‘ahs |

“Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah”
How to Pray 4 Rak‘ahs
Intention (Niyyah): In your heart, intend which prayer you’re offering (e.g., Dhuhr – 4 rak‘ah fard).
Takbir al-Ihram: Raise your hands and say “Allahu Akbar.”
Rak‘ah 1:
- Recite Surah Al-Fatiha.
- Recite another Surah (commonly short ones like Ikhlas, Falaq, or Nas).
- Go to Ruku (bow) saying Subhana Rabbiyal-‘Azim 3 times.
- Stand up straight (Sami‘Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana lakal-hamd).
- Perform Sujood (prostration) twice, saying Subhana Rabbiyal-A‘la 3 times each.
Rak‘ah 2: Repeat the same steps. After the 2nd Sujood, sit for Tashahhud (At-tahiyyatu lillahi…). Then stand up for the 3rd rak‘ah.
Rak‘ah 3 & 4:
- Recite Surah Al-Fatiha only (no extra Surah in Fard prayer).
- Complete Ruku, Sujood as usual.
Final Tashahhud: After the 4th rak‘ah, sit and recite Tashahhud, Salat Ibrahimiyya (Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad…) and Duas.
End: Finish with Tasleem – turning head right and left saying “Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah.”
